Because they’re worth it…..

In an overlooked moment in the middle of an overlooked movie (“He’s Just Not That Into You”, which I happen to believe is a staple of the cheesy-romantic comedy variety), Ben Affleck’s character draws a comparison between friendship and marriage, explaining to his girlfriend:
“Think about you and your friends, ok?” he tells her. “These women you have great relationships with, you’re close to them, some of them you’ve known for years. But you don’t feel the need to write a $45 check to the state of Maryland for a friendship certificate. Why should it be any different with you and me?”
Now, marriage might come of worse in that comparison. And feelings towards that grand institution, with its’ pomp and circumstance aside, Ben has a point. We don’t celebrate our friendships nearly as much as we should.
Valentine’s day is a day designated to celebrate love – and there’s no reason that you shouldn’t celebrate love of all kinds.
Need a few ideas? No problem.
It’s an old classic. But it’s a classic for a reason. Flowers are always elegant and always beautiful… And they pass on your message without you having to say a word.
2.Friendship Necklaces/Friendship Bracelets
You may not be in the third grade anymore, and maybe you’ve outgrown those little plastic broken-heart necklaces, but that doesn’t mean you can’t still show your appreciation for your friends with a little something sparkly. Choose a necklace with a beautiful engraved message, with one of her favorite quotations or a sweet inspirational message… or just pick something beautiful for its own sake. Either way, she will know she is loved and appreciated.
3.Hand-made Gifts/Hand-knitted Gifts
She can get a scarf at any store, but she can’t always get a scarf hand-knitted by her best friend in her favorite color. If you’re looking to save a little cash, a home-made gift is a great way to go – and a beautiful way to show your friends how much you love them.
You’ll be there for her no matter what – but sometimes it’s nice be reminded. Write up a cute little coupon book, full of ‘free’ offers. A night worth of babysitting or a girl’s night out can mean a lot. Maybe just a venting coupon – one where she can spill all of her woes and issues without you saying a word, just listening. Sometimes, just letting your friends know that you care can mean so much.
5. Take Her Out
Friends may not be the traditional target of Valentine’s Day marketing, but that doesn’t mean the two of you can’t savor a lovely meal together. It doesn’t have to be on the day itself – maybe a day after or a day before. It doesn’t have to be a dinner. Breakfast or lunch, brunch or a simple coffee… Any small gift of shared time, shared conversation and shared laughter can show your friends how important they are to you.
You may not need an official certificate of friendship, but it never hurts to show your friends how much you care about them…. And Valentine’s Day is as good a day as any to show that love.
